Turn Up for What? -- Sculpture

$2,800.00

Turn Up for What?

2022  |  Horsehair Raku  |  Terra Sigillata with Interference and Standard Mica  |  13 x 6.5 x 6.5 in  |  InnerConnected Series  |  $2,800

Turn Up for What? carries no glaze. Its surface is built from two terra sigillatas, a fine clay slip infused with mica, layered in two distinct zones. The upper half uses an interference mica powder: when the carbon from horsehair and sugar introduced during horsehair raku hits this surface, the carbon trapping process pulls the purple out of the interference mica rather than reading black, a white to purple luminescence that shifts with the light and the angle. The lower half uses a standard purple mica, where the horsehair and sugar leave the darker, more expected carbon patterns of the raku process. At the transition between the two layers, the heat transfer and overlap produced ghost line work, unplanned, unrepeatable, permanent. Two components, one lower vessel and one sculptural topper, in conversation with each other the way intensity converses with its own aftermath. Finished in a protective clear coat. Best displayed away from direct prolonged sunlight, which will bleach the mica colorant over time. Certificate of authenticity and payment plan available.
