Cre·ole

/ˈkrēˌōl/

Originally used to describe people born in the New World, in Spanish Colonial Louisiana the term became applied to anything born of or grown in Louisiana. As African and indigenous practices combined to produce in new social contexts, so too combined the languages, cultures and foods. This is our heritage.

The Ranch Houston acknowledges the Akokisa forebears of this land and the Atakapa tribe from which they emerged. In our quest for responsible land stewardship, the Creole Garden seeks to return to African and Indigenous ancestral growing practices out of respect for the original inhabitants of this country and those who tilled it.

Listen. The ancestors are speaking.
