Tears of Sorrow carries no glaze. Its surface is a terra sigillata, a fine clay slip, infused with blue interference mica powder. During the horsehair raku process, carbon trapping pulls the blue out of the interference mica rather than reading black, producing a luminescent cool blue that shifts with light and angle. The horsehair and sugar leave their marks across the surface, unpredictable, unrepeatable, the record of a single firing. Finished in a protective clear coat and best displayed away from direct prolonged sunlight, which will bleach the mica colorant over time.
