Stresses rises nearly 18 inches from a textured amber base, blue rutile rings held and pulled by deep firebrick coils that function as both stressor and support. Each intersection is a point of pressure made permanent in clay. The piece occupies space the way stress does: insistently, at the edges of what holds. The glaze tells the truth, the forces bearing down on us are rarely only destructive. One of the largest works in the series, Stresses speaks to the universal experience of holding structure together under forces that have no interest in your stability, and yet cannot exist without it.
