Balanced has been broken three times and repaired each time in kintsugi, the base ring joint to the plate, a fire fracture across the plate itself, and the top ring joint. The gold at each repair is not hidden. It is the piece. Northern Lights glaze in reduction raku produces a deep green-black surface; fired slightly immature here, the white that reads across the surface is a living reaction between moisture and glaze, preserved in place with a protective clear coat at exactly this moment in time. The rings stack off-axis, leaning, improbably upright. Balanced does not promise stability. It demonstrates it, precariously, after fracture, as a choice made moment to moment.
